About me My name is Jacqueline Viviano. This is my second year teaching the 6th grade at Eisenhower Elementary. Prior to teaching at Eisenhower, I was a part of the Fraser family for a few years, as a substitute and Intervention Specialist. I am an Oakland University graduate and plan to continue my education in the future. I really enjoy teaching and working with the 6th graders!
Arrival/Dismissal
School begins promptly at 8:40 A.M. Students may enter the room at 8:35 A.M. through our classroom door. Dismissal is at 3:30 PM and students will exit from the door around the corner from our classroom that leads to the front of the building.
Folders Each child will be given a green folder. These folders will be used as our “Take Home Folder”. All correspondence and homework will be sent in these folders daily.
Planners
Planners will be used to recap some of the work that we completed in school, homework, or as a reminder for upcoming events, assignments/tests. I encourage you to ask your child about the things that we write in our planner. This may help answer the question, “What did you do in school today?”
Weekly Evaluations Weekly evaluations will be sent home on Friday. This will let you know if your child has late/missing homework and if there were any issues during the week that I feel you should be aware of. ALL students will receive an evaluation. Please sign the evaluation and return on Monday. If the evaluation is not signed, your child will lose recess until the evaluation is returned to school.
PowerSchool
Another great way to keep track of how your child is doing is to check PowerSchool. I am constantly inputting grades and this is the fastest way to check your child's grades, and to see if they have any missing/late assignments.
Homework Homework is due the next day unless otherwise noted. Homework due to absence may be made up without reduced credit. If your child is absent for one day, they will have one day to make up the homework. After that, the work will be considered late or missing. Homework is intended to finish class assignments or supplement the curriculum. Homework will only be accepted one day late for reduced credit of 50%.
D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read)
Every day after lunch, time will be set aside for silent reading. Students are encouraged to bring a book in from home to read or they can read the books they picked from the library. I also have a classroom library available to the students. During D.E.A.R., students may also work on any homework from the morning.
Scholastic Book Orders
Each month, you will receive a book order form. This is an optional program. The books available are age appropriate and usually reasonably priced. Payment should be made by check only to “Scholastic”.
FISH!
There are a number of new behavior incentives being implemented at Eisenhower Elementary. The students will be asked to follow the FISH! Philosophy. The criteria for the FISH! Philosophy is: Choose your Attitude, Make Their Day, Play, and Be There. I will discuss our new program, FISH!, with the students. This program offers a monthly incentive to the students. If your child has demonstrated positive behavior consistently throughout the month, and has turned in their work, they will be eligible to participate in the reward activity. Criteria for the incentive may change throughout the school year. Some examples of the events that the students may qualify are: Movie at the high school, Electronics Day, Swimming at the high school, Kona Ice Truck and more! More information will be coming soon!
Rules As a class, we will discuss the expected behaviors in 6th grade. As a 6th grader, your child is considered a leader and needs to act in such a way that models good behavior for the younger students. The students will practice one word this year….RESPECT. If respect is shown at all times, all other aspects of behavior will positively follow. During the first week of school, the students and I will collaborate to create rules for our classroom.
Some basic rules for our class are:
*Be responsible
*Be ready
*Follow directions
*Take care of our classroom
I am always encouraging positive behavior in the classroom. When I see a student consistently practicing our rules, I will reward them.
In the event that consequences are necessary, these are the steps that will be followed:
*Warning
*Time off of recess
*No recess/Note or call home
*Sent to office
CURRICULUM
Reading Students will be reading classroom novels throughout the year. They will also be tested on their comprehension levels and placed in smaller reading groups for more individualized instruction. Students will be taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) three times this school year.
Writing
During writing we will be working on many different skills. Each child will have a writing journal and will be given prompts to focus on. Spelling tests are given weekly and will be graded.
Some required writings:
*Argument Essay * Complaint Letter
*Informational Essay
Math
Text: Everyday Mathematics Students are given a consumable workbook and a hard covered reference book. Both books may be taken home. Periodically, our math lessons will be taught in the form of a "Math Workshop." The students will move around the room to different stations. The stations will have an activity for the students to work on. Each group of students will also meet with me. During this time we will work on the lesson of the day.
Social Studies
Text: Exploring Our World
Emphasis is given on map skills, people, history, and cultures of the Western Hemisphere, Europe, and Russia. Core democratic values and constructed responses will be given.
Science
The program is essentially hands-on using a variety of visual and auditory sources. Each student will receive a journal for every unit. They will be responsible for making sure each lesson has been filled in appropriately. These will be collected for a grade at the end of the unit.
Technology
Students will be receiving iPads again sometime at the beginning of the year. The iPad is a part of our daily instruction. It is very important that the iPad is brought to school every day and is FULLY charged. If the iPad is forgotten at home consistently, or is being used inappropriately, it will result in loss of privileges. Please go over the acceptable usage policy given by the district with your child.
Band
Students that are in band will go to band 3 days a week for 30 minutes. Band students also get to participate in many fun activities throughout the school year. During the scheduled band time, I will not be introducing new curriculum. I highly encourage your child to participate in band. This is a great opportunity for them to explore music and find a passion that they can take with them to middle school.
Special Classes

Tuesday- H.E.A.R.T and Band
Wednesday- 21st Century
Thursday- Art and Band
Friday- Physical Education and Band

Snack Our lunch begins at 12:30 PM. During the morning, I will set aside time for the students to have HEALTHY snack. This will be a “working snack,” the students will eat while they continue with their work. This is not a meal, the snack should be healthy and simple. We are limiting our drinks to water. I do not allow Gatorade, pop, juice, coffee, hot chocolate and so on. I do allow the students to have water bottles on their desks, as long as they do not become a distraction. Birthday Treats Birthday treats are not allowed at Eisenhower. I will discuss with the class possible ways to acknowledge the birthdays for each month, without using treats.
School Dress Code The school dress code will be strictly enforced. Please refer to the school handbook for more information regarding the dress code.
Absences
Attendance is a very crucial part of your child's education. Majority of our curriculum is based on hands-on activities. If your child is consistently absent, it is very hard to recreate the lessons that were missed.
Donations If you have anything that you would like to donate to our classroom we would greatly appreciate it. Currently, we are in need of board games, age appropriate puzzles and outside equipment.
Special Activities
We are looking forward to a great year filled with great things. Some of the activities we will be participating in are:

6th Grade Field Day (May)
6th Grade Picnic (June)
